As we’ve been approaching Christmas, many people have been asking me what I’m going to be doing for Christmas. I have a general idea of what I’ll be doing but things change here so frequently that I could be wrong. What I know at the moment is that I’ll be going with Faye and Lilli and Tuu (she’s the new addition to our team in Sop Soi) to NPJT and going to a church service there to celebrate the birth of Jesus. Then we’ll all eat a special Thai-yai meal altogether (including many from the village who aren’t yet believers) (I think we’ll eat “khaow sen”) and then eat some Thai-yai snacks that are only made this time of year (“khaow pok”). Then we’ll hang out in that village for awhile with our friends there.
My roommates and I will be having our own Christmas celebrations on the 26th or 27th. Some of the things we hope to do include: make Christmas cookies, watch Christmas movies, listen to Christmas music, open presents and stockings and eat a nice Christmas meal together…. I realize that none of these things would be something that we’d want to teach believers to do here – but they’re our traditions, as materialistic as some of them are, and they’re the kind of things that we can do that make being away from home over Christmas not so sad.
